The reference check is probably the most ignored part of the job search process.

As a recruiter I'm always amazed how many job searchers consider the reference check to be a moot point given how little time and effort they spend on this part of their job search.

Typically, references are completed by a company (or recruiter) directly before they are about to make a job offer. Companies aren't in the process of creating extra work for themselves so they tend to only proceed with references when they are about to make an offer to someone or in rare cases, when they are trying to decide between two candidates they consider to be equal.

In this case, the references could be the deciding point to determine which of the two candidates gets the job!

There are probably two big myths surrounding the reference check and they can cost you a job because they are both wrong:

Reference Check Myth 1: Once you've made it to the reference check stage, you've pretty much got the job offer wrapped up.

The assumption here seems to be that the reference check is unimportant. This couldn't be further from the truth.

The purpose of a reference check is for a hiring manager to verify your experience and to verify the positive thoughts that they have about you with an independent source, someone who has worked with you in the past.

A poor reference check can and most likely will cost you a job.

Reference Check Myth 2: There is no such thing as a bad reference check.

Uh, yes there is... Trust me, I've completed a bad reference check for some of my job candidates on more than one occasion. The "best" bad reference check was for a woman whose former boss told me that he refused to provide a reference check for her because she hadn't left his company on good terms and he wanted nothing to do with her!

Apparently, his opinion of this lady was not quite as high as she thought it would be...Needless to say I stopped helping this lady with her job search as soon as this happened.

If I had been a hiring manager about to offer her a job and I'd gotten this response during a reference check, do you think I would have then made her a job offer?

Neither do I.

The only reference check you should be getting is a glowing one.

Otherwise, why would you utilize this person as a reference?

Of course, no one is perfect and you're certainly not asking your references to lie about your background. But if you use someone as a reference who refuses to even provide a reference check for you or gives you a really poor one, you should expect to lose out on jobs.

How should you organize your references?

Be sure to do the following at a minimum:

1. Put together a list of perhaps 4 references ideally. Most companies will do 3 reference checks so having a spare person listed helps if one of the other references you mentioned are hard to get hold of, if they are on holiday, etc. 2. Choose business references who know you well and who will honestly answer questions regarding your background in detail. Try to avoid people who give short yes and no answers to questions if possible. As a recruiter, I've done references where getting a detailed answer from the person is like pulling teeth, which is not helpful to your chances at getting the job! 3. Let each of your references know BEFORE they are going to be called to do a reference check for you. This way, they won't be surprised when they get the call and you can tell them in advance which company will be calling them, what job you are being considered for and so that you can let them know which of your skills they will be asked about. 4. Don't forget to thank your references after you've gotten the job. You might need to utilize them as references again in the future so don't be a stranger and forget to keep in touch with them.

The reference check stage of the job search process can't be underestimated even though many people do this. People do lose out on job offers at this stage and in many cases, probably don't even realize it!

On that note, if you find you are performing well in interviews, make it to the reference check stage, but then don't get a job offer, you might need to look at who you are using as references and figure out if there is a problem.

If one or more of your references aren't giving you a glowing reference, you need to know about it so that you can find out why, and then find another person to use in their place.

If you have put this much time and effort to get this close to getting a new job, don't risk throwing it away now at the reference check stage.

We can always count on Oprah. If we need a good book, or a good chocolate, she's there with a recommendation and, if you happen to be in the audience, a sample. Perhaps Oprah is at her best, however, when you need a swift kick in the bottom - when you need someone telling it like it is, pulling no punches.

We turn to Oprah for weight loss advice and inspiration, tips on jeans that don't make our butts look big, and "girl, no you didn't" comments on our hair and makeup. So it's no surprise that Oprah, queen of the TV talk show and the best friend we've never met, has turned the makeover show on its head by offering us a series called "Have you let yourself go"?

The women featured on the series of shows have a variety of life stories to tell, from abuse and weight gain to broken relationships and significant life changes that brought them to a point, they say, of losing themselves and letting themselves go.

The Oprah message boards have been buzzing since the first shows aired. Women confess they know exactly how the show guests feel, and share similar stories of putting others first, feeling depressed, gaining weight and feeling hopeless and helpless to put things right.

There are thousands of used cars for sale on eBay every
single day. In fact, eBay Motors is the most profitable
sales division on eBay and naturally there are many
entrepreneurs who are interested in jumping into this
market. For instance, eBay claims it sells an SUV every nine
seconds and is the biggest online car dealer in America,
exceeding the traditional car companies. In fact, there are
15 million cars sold over the Internet each year - and
growing.

The recent rapid growth of the consignment business model
has made the used car market even more enticing. Many
sellers are able to sell cars they have never even seen and
with no more risk than the cost of the auction listing. Some
negotiators even persuade the car owner to pay for the ad,
thereby risking no more than their time.

trust of prospective buyers. After all, paying thousands or
tens of thousands of dollars for a car sight unseen is an

purchase, and if he is happy, he notifies the escrow company

the buyer's money. Thus both sides in the transaction are
protected. The buyer almost always pays the fees for this,
although sometimes buyer and seller split the cost.

dealing with the used cars, trucks, SUVs and almost anything
else with wheels and a motor. The buyer can request a 160
point inspection performed before agreeing to the purchase.
This is an inexpensive service and certainly will save the
purchaser many headaches.

* The seller is contacted and the inspection is carried outv
* The buyer receives a reportv
* The buyer chooses to go ahead with the purchase - or not

Another choice for the buyer is to deposit his payment with
the escrow service and then take delivery of the vehicle.
The seller ships the car after he knows the money his
secure. The seller must provide tracking information, which
is then verified.

The buyer has between one and 30 days to thoroughly inspect
his new purchase (the period is negotiated between the two
parties ahead of time). If this time expires and the escrow
company has not heard from the buyer, it assumes he is happy
and gives the purchase price to the seller.

The buyer may return his vehicle if he isn't happy and
sometimes buyers and sellers work out partial payment
agreements, the buyer being satisfied with some parts of the
transaction, but not with others. If a dispute arises, it is
settled by the American Arbitration Association.

Once both parties have agreed, the title transfer process
begins and the escrow service will guarantee this too, for a

eBay's escrow service also offers a service that will ship
cars almost anywhere in the world and will gather an auto
history report to inform sellers if their new chariot has
been salvaged or stolen, suffered flood or hail damage, been
in a fire or accident, has had an odometer rollback or has
been used as a police car, a rental or a taxi.

Anyone considering offering used cars for sale on eBay would
be well advised to thoroughly learn the escrow services
available and offer those to prospective buyers. The trust
factor will skyrocket and your chances of completing sales
will dramatically increase.

How to Make Restaurant Quality Coffee At Home

Have you ever wondered how restaurants get their coffee to taste so good?

First of all, restaurants are in the business of pampering you so they devote much more time to the perfection of a good cup of coffee. Sometimes I'll remember a restaurant just because of their excellent coffee.

So what are their secrets and how can you duplicate this recipe at home? It may surprise you to find out that the French Press brewing method could be the secret in achieving that restaurant quality taste.

How to Make Restaurant Quality Coffee At Home

Most fine restaurants use a press pot, also known as the French Press, which produces an extremely rich cup of coffee.

Press pot coffee is coffee steeped for 3-4 minutes between 195 to 205 degrees F. It produces a thicker and much richer taste than an auto-drip machine can produce.

A disadvantage of the French Press is it may leave trace amounts of coffee sediment. But the rich taste more than makes up for the small amount of sediment at the bottom of your cup.

So first, start off with a quality medium roast coffee, which is what most restaurants use. I can give you a couple of good recommendations.

Seattle's Best Breakfast Blend, Starbucks Breakfast Blend or Starbucks Sulawesi Coffee is 3 excellent choices. These are full-bodied coffees yet very smooth tasting. They are some of our best sellers at PerfectCoffees.com and work well for French Press brewing.

You want to grind the coffee slightly larger than you would for drip coffee. Too fine of a grind will produce a bitter cup of coffee. If your grind is too coarse, the coffee will taste weak. A quality grinder is the best thing you can do to improve the taste of French press coffee.

Remove the plunger from the press pot and put 1 rounded tablespoon of coarse ground coffee per each 6oz. of water into the pot. You can adjust this to your own taste.

Coffee is 99% water so use clean filtered or bottled water free from chlorine and other minerals that affect the taste of coffee.

Boil the water and remove it from the heat for five minutes before you pour it. This will give you the 195 to 205 degree water that is ideal to brew with. Now pour the 195 to 205 degree water over the ground coffee.

Stir the coffee to get total saturation of the grounds then place the plunger on top of the pot and let the coffee steep for 3 to 4 minutes.

Depress the plunger slowly to push the grounds to the bottom of the pot.

Serve all the coffee in the pot after the 3 to 4 minutes of steeping. Otherwise the coffee will keep getting stronger.

If you have any left, you can always transfer it to a clean, preheated air pot or a stainless steel Thermos. This will keep the coffee hot about an hour without hurting the flavor.

The French press brewing method definitely takes more time but gives us the result we are looking for. Restaurant quality coffee in the comfort of your own home.
